Recent data from JLA Speakers reveals that bookings for interactive presentation formats have surged dramatically rising from just 23 bookings in 2018 to 208 in 2024, an increase of over 800 %. This trend, coined the “Keynote Killer,” reflects evolving audience expectations and the growing influence of social media–driven attention habits.

Traditional hour‑long keynotes are rapidly being replaced by conversational sessions, micro‑talks, and podcast‑style formats that foster greater engagement. Fireside chats, in particular, have become popular, offering attendees intimate, dialogue‑driven experiences where interaction nearly equals presentation time. Event planners report that many conferences are shifting from the conventional 75/25 presentation‑to‑Q&A split toward a more balanced 50/50 structure.

Organizers note that audiences now expect more than passive listening; they want to engage, discuss, and co-create meaning in real time. As one industry expert put it, formats that facilitate active participation "complement the strong foundation of keynote content" and deliver superior value to attendees.

This transformation suggests a broader shift in event design where immersive, interactive formats increasingly take center stage. As attention spans shorten and expectations rise, these agile new formats are proving to be the true keynote killers.
